April Grayson

Over the past two decades, April has worked in documentary film and video, oral history practice, and arts education, and in the racial equity field as a facilitator, trainer, and consultant. Much of her racial equity work has been through her affiliation with the Alluvial Collective (formerly known as the William Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation), where she facilitated dialogue and equity processes, led anti-racism workshops and training, oversaw oral history and documentary projects, and facilitated restorative/transformative justice projects.

Since 2021, she has co-facilitated transatlantic civic education exchanges, including bringing together law enforcement and civil society professionals to address some of society's most protracted divisions.

April’s social practice as an artist and racial equity practitioner is based largely in circle processes that create spaces for listening, sharing, and learning from one another, with a focus on justice and equity to lift up voices and provide openings for new individual and community narratives to emerge out of a history of trauma and resistance. These experiences draw on confidential story-sharing, audio and video, oral histories, collaborative memorialization events, and presentations.

April is a circle holder for restorative justice and conflict mediation processes, working with adults in a variety of settings and organizations, and she especially loves working with young people in schools and out-of-school youth projects.
